Choosing a Character

Sonic Mania Plus has many characters with varied play styles and exploration options. Try them all to find your match.

Sonic: Hedgehog His distinctive Drop Dash move lets him dash immediately after landing, keeping momentum and moving fast through levels. Combining with Tails increases adaptability.

Tails: Tails can fly with his two tails to reach lofty regions and secret passageways Sonic cannot. He can swim.

Echidna Knuckles: Strength. Knuckles' ability to glide and climb walls lets him overcome obstacles and create new passageways.

Mighty the Armadillo: His Hammer Drop move allows him to break through obstacles below and drop hidden items from trees. His hard shell also prevents him from losing his rings when falling on spikes the first time.

Ray the Flying Squirrel: Master of the air. His Air Glide ability allows Ray to hover in space longer than Knuckles and Tails, and if used skillfully, he can gain momentum and fly higher, allowing him to explore levels in a highly unique way.

Core Mechanism

Keeping Rings: Rings are more than points. As long as you have a ring, you can be hit and survive. Pick up as many rings as possible and as quickly as they fall. Rings also serve as tickets to Bonus Stages at Checkpoint milestones.

Utilize Shields: Shields not only protect you from one hit but also provide unique abilities:

Fire Shield: Resists fire and allows Sonic to perform a mid-air fire glide attack.

Electric Shield: Attracts rings and allows Sonic to perform a double jump.

Bubble Shield: This shield lets Sonic breathe underwater forever and helps him jump higher.

Keep the motion going: Sonic is all about speed and momentum. To go faster, learn how to use jumps, spins, and springs. Avoid unnecessary collisions and use the character's signature moves to keep Sonic moving.
